Concert: Death Cab and Magik Magik Orchestra!

April 18, 2012 | PK

As I’ve probably mentioned on this blog, I can’t thank Eric enough for formally introducing me to DCFC. Now, a few concerts and several listens later, I’m hooked. Ben Gibbard is one of my favorite lead singers in music. Death Cab now falls in my top 5, so I jumped at the chance to sit front row for the spring tour with the Magik Magik Orchestra.

Anyway, the concert (skipping the forgettable opener) started off with an orchestral intro, leading to Ben coming out and playing “Passenger Seat”. Let me tell assure you that the strings made each song a little more memorable. They were a great addition. Throughout the night, they weaved around different tracks, not playing all of the classics. I loved the opening, including “Different Names for the Same Thing”. “Hindsight” was also another one that I didn’t see coming.

The set was great, and it was the closest I’ll ever get at a show. I finally got my string version of “Stay Young, Go Dancing” at the end of the first set. This was one of my favorite songs of 2011. After that, the guys came out without the orchestra and played some acoustic songs. The strings came back in time for “I Will Follow You into the Dark”. Overall, it was a great experience. The picture below shows Gibbard and Walla going into a story or a joke. I loved some of Ben’s comments about the young audience and how the band felt guilty for being over 30. His funniest moment was when he went on about the crazy nature of a DCFC tour and the delicious apple turnovers at catering. They aren’t the youngest band, but they definitely know how to put on a concert. I look forward to many more in the future.
